Some key points of the climate summit:
- Speeding the energy transition is one of the areas of focus for the climate talks. Due to the rapid increase of greenhouse gas emissions, the scaling of renewable energy such as hydrogen fuels and carbon capture technologies.
- During the Trade Day of COP28, countries expressed interests in the potential ways to reduce emissions across the trade value chain, in addition to the aims of growing markets for climate-friendly products. Whether it be through electric vehicles and non-plastic packaging usage.
- With the establishment of the Global Stocktake, 200 countries are pledging to divert from the reliance on fossil fuels. This is considered a major breakthrough that came through the talks of the UN Climate Change Conference of COP28.
- In fact, emissions are expected to be reduced by 42% by 2030 and limit the effect of global warming to 1.5ÂșC above the pre-industrial levels. To tackle this statement, 60 countries signed the Global Cooling Pledge and the Global Methane Pledge. In addition, 27 countries signed a pledge for the Building Breakthrough.
According to Inger Andersen, an Executive Director of the UN Environmental Programme, he argues that “the deal is not perfect, but one thing is clear: the world is no longer denying our harmful addiction to fossil fuels.”
